California State University, San Bernardino, or CSUSB for short, is a public university located in San Bernardino, which is the county seat of San Bernardino County, situated in the US state of California, having a population estimated at a number of more than 207 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which makes it the 18th largest city in the state and the 99th largest city in the States.
CSUSB was created in April, 1960, by the state legislature, as San Bernardino-Riverside State College, and became known under its current name in 1963, when it achieved university status. Since it first opened its doors to students, CSUSB has consistently grown, having today an enrollment estimated at a number of over 17 000 students and approximately 65 000, living-world-wide alumni, offering 100 degree, credential and certificate programs, in various fields of study, through 5 colleges, which are: the College of Arts and Letters, College of Business and Public Administration, College of Education, College of Natural Sciences, and College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Over the years, Cal State San Bernardino has been highly ranked by various significant publications, ranking no. 1 among the 23 California State University campuses in first-to-second-year retention of African American students and no. 3 in the retention of Latino students, The Princeton Review placing it among the top 25 percent of universities across the nation, also naming it a 2009 Best College in the Western Region.
The athletic teams from Cal State San Bernardino are known as the CSUSB Coyotes, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, soccer, softball, water polo, volleyball and tennis. The Coyotes have experienced succes, many times, over the years, in many of the sports in which they compete, since 1984, taking many local and regional championships and regularly finishing high up in national tournaments, the men's soccer team reaching the NCAA Division III national semifinals in 1987, also capturing the university’s first NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association title in 1991, the men's golf team finishing 3rd in the national tournament three times in its history, to name a few of their most notable achievements.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Anthony Adams - California State Assemblyman, 59th district, Craig Arnold - senior vice president, Eaton Corporation and president of the Fluid Power Group of Eaton Corporation, Cleveland, OH, Appannagari `Dev` GnanaDev - medical director and chairman of the department of surgery at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, Colton, California, Joriz De Guzman - youngest student ever to graduate from CSUSB at age 15, and Lee D.
